Three days after Mark Ruffalo slammed capitalism on social media and called for an “economic revolution,” the Avengers star appeared in a promo supporting Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Ruffalo said: [“The one person that just keeps coming up to me and popping out to me is Bernie Sanders. The key issues that most of the leaders in the field are either espousing or working around the edges are health care, not taking money from big corporations and PACs, fighting climate change, some sort of debt relief for college students [and] free education. People considered those things to be pie in the sky in 2016, right? Now they are the norm because Bernie stood and walked into those issues that he knew were the right issues for the American working class. So I proudly and humbly throw my support to Bernie Sanders.”] SOUNDCUE (:47 OC: . . .to Bernie Sanders.)
He continued, explaining how his childhood helped give him perspective on economic challenges: “I grew up in a factory town – what was probably one of the biggest industrial hubs in the United States at the turn of the century – which is Kenosha, Wisconsin. I grew up in those working-class neighborhoods where my neighbors worked at American Motors or Anchor Hocking or Anaconda Brass. I saw those companies closed down and I saw my community devastated. The thing about the working-class people that I grew up with was they had a real kind of moral center to them.”
He continued: “I think that’s partially why Bernie resonates with me because he feels like those people. I believe in him and he is the people that I grew up with. He is those working-class people and I know that he’s got their backs because that’s who he is.”
Ruffalo also chatted with GQ about how playing the Hulk can be super-embarrassing. He has to do so much motion capture for the roles, he is forced to wear a tight-fitting leotard throughout as his co-stars like Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson sashay around in full regalia.
Of the weird get-up he had to wear, he said: "It was so humiliating. All of the actors, whenever I would walk out, would just start laughing at me because they were in their cool superhero costumes and I'm wearing ridiculous pyjamas that make me look like a Chinese checkers board."
"Hulk catches [Robert] Downey [Jr.]… and he puts him on the ground, right?" Ruffalo notes. "I decide I'm gonna do this Hulk roar over him in my little leotard. He had his eyes closed, and he just opened one and went, 'Really, Ruffalo? That's what you're really going with?'
"That's what it's always been like! On the last movie, he came up to me and he said, 'I have a lot of compassion for you. I see how hard it is for you to stand around in that costume all day."
