Brad Pitt is sharing his journey to sobriety. In a revealing interview with The New York Times, the 55-year-old admits that he has a drinking problem, and that after he split from his wife Angelina Jolie, he decided to tackle it so that he could responsibly parent their six children.
He said that he struggled emotionally post-split: “The fact is, we all carry pain, grief and loss. We spend most of our time hiding it, but it’s there, it’s in you. So you open up those boxes.”
Pitt even joined Alcoholics Anonymous. He said: “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges. You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”
Pitt explained that revealing his whole self was healing: “It was actually really freeing just to expose the ugly sides of yourself. There’s great value in that.”
Jolie, 44, filed for divorce in September of 2016, following a reported fight onboard a private plane between Pitt and Maddox. All told, the pair share Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 11.
Pitt can next be see in Ad Astra, out September 20th.
